About

This 90-minute online training course explores the accessibility information needed by library and disability support staff to help them provide timely and effective support for disabled students in FE and HE.

The course is aimed at suppliers (both publishers and aggregators) but will also benefit academic libraries looking to increase staff expertise in accessibility advice and guidance.

Course benefits

As a publisher or aggregator, you will get:

  • An overview of the main findings of the crowd-sourced 2018 ASPIRE audit and how to use the data to improve your ranking
  • An opportunity to understand the accessibility of your own product
  • Tips on how to create an accessibility statement that maximises the value of your product to end users
  • Guidance to help you create an accessibility statement or improve your current one

As a librarian or disability support practitioner, you will get:

  • A clear understanding of the potential accessibility barriers and benefits in digital textbooks and journals
  • Confidence in making recommendations to students
  • More clarity about when you might or might not need to make alternative format requests
  • No travel - attend from your desk
  • Learn from subject experts from the Jisc community

Who should attend

This online course is designed to support publishers, aggregators and library communities, equipping them to work together effectively in order to meet legal obligations of universities and colleges in providing information in accessible formats.

From the supply perspective, it will be of interest to those involved in customer relations, web/marketing teams or people involved in supporting accessibility queries.

From the educator perspective, it will be valuable for library/learning resource services and those supporting disabled students.

What we cover

  • The legislative background
  • Labyrinths of ignorance – information fragmentation in organisations
  • The ASPIRE audit process – marking criteria and what they mean
  • Knowing and showing – how to test files and interfaces and signpost by accessibility needs
  • Turning weakness into strength – workarounds to add value to your product

Training outcomes

Following the online course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the value of a good accessibility statement to readers, library and disability staff
  • Suppliers will be able to assess their own accessibility statement and improve it (or create a practical and useful statement from scratch if appropriate)
  • Raise the profile of accessibility across the supply chain by having a clear, reader focused language through which to communicate
  • Suppliers will be able to plan short-term and long-term improvements to existing quality processes and frameworks
