Course Overview

This course builds on the IT Security related courses in the JANET Training portfolio and provides practical advice for securing devices connected to campus networks across JANET. Split into four key sections, the focus is: the Network, Server Platforms, Desktop Computers and the Perimeter (including wireless and VPN technologies).
The practical elements of this course concentrate on the use of open source tools and hands on configuration of networking hardware and server platforms which can be used in a number of scenarios to assist with the security work undertaken by members of the JANET(UK) community.

This course aims to provide participants with practical guidance for implementing IT Security measures at all locations on the Campus Network. From network devices to servers, many facets will be introduced and the delegates invited to explore possible solutions. Delegates will use hands on activities to learn and gain experience with both specifics tools, but also the methodology.

Who should attend?

This course will be of interest to staff working at JANET connected organisation with responsibility for the management of IT Security on the network or Server Systems Administrators.. Some networking and technology background and/or knowledge would be an advantage as would knowledge of preventive security, delegates might find attending our ‘Managing IT Security’ course prior to registering for this course an advantage.
Experience with using a computer and a standard web browser is required.

Timetable/On the Day

The course timetable will be adjusted on the day to allow discussion of areas of particular interest to the audience. The course will therefore run from 10am to 4.30pm. Registration will take place from 09:45 – 10:00.

All our courses are designed to provide a balance between practical activities and information dissemination as we believe people learn when they are engaged within the instructional process. This course includes participant involvement through hands-on activities, discussion, group work and simulations created specifically for the course. All delegates will receive a workbook specifically written for the course.
