Introduction to JANET

- Explain the current JANET topology diagram, including the rationale and structure of regional networks
- Describe the types of connections to JANET and who is eligible for connection
- Identify and articulate how the JANET policies impact their organisation’s policies, behaviour and use of the network
- Describe the role of JANET(UK) and how their organisation can have an impact on the management and development of JANET
- Describe the majority of the JANET services and their main activities
- Describe the importance of network security and identify areas for further consideration within their own organisation
- Describe some of the legal responsibilities their organisation has and describe practical examples of areas for concern in their role
- Describe the responsibilities of a JANET-CSIRT contact and their role within their organisation. Clearly explain how an organisation should respond to requests and issues from JANET-CSIRT
- Describe the role of JISC and where the management of JANET(UK) fits into the JISC structure
- Describe the various different ways of getting help and support from JANET(UK), and identify areas where this support might be relevant to their team and role
- Describe the development work carried out by JANET(UK) and suggest a number of technologies and services that might support work within their connected organisation. They will also be able to describe how their organisation can contribute to the development carried out by JANET(UK).
Course Overview
JANET plays an important role in supporting teaching, learning, administration and research. By connecting in one form or another all the educational sectors in the UK, JANET enables individuals, disciplines and projects to communicate, share information and access and national and international resources. The aim of this course is to improve delegates understanding of the network and associated services with a view to enabling them, and their respective organisations, to make effective use of their JANET connection. The focus of the course is the development of participants understanding of the network rather than providing technical detail.

Benefits
The course is of benefit to anyone new to the JANET network or those wishing to update their knowledge. The course is presented by JANET(UK) staff who will provide up to date information of ongoing development work and will endeavour to respond to specific questions and issues that you might have.
Who should attend?
This course is open to anyone from a JANET connected organisation. The course content is not of a technical nature so technical knowledge is not required although experience with using a computer and a standard web browser is vital.
Timetable/On the Day
The course will run between 1000 and 1630. Registration will take place between 0930 and 1000. The timetable during the day will be adjusted to allow discussion of areas of particular interest to the audience.
Cost
This course is available at no cost to primary and interconnected organisations. However places are limited to one delegate per organisation per course.
