Course Overview

Early at the inception of the Internet, attacks started to occur with an increased frequency. This lead to the development of tools to prevent unwanted communications according to a defined security policy. Firewalls now play a key part of any modern day network infrastructure and the concept has extended from a System Administration term into everyday vocabulary. The aim of this course is to provide participants with practical experiences of implementing firewall systems using various platforms, knowledge of the best places to implement firewalls and to reinforce the technical knowledge required to manage firewalls.

This course provides a sound background behind the theory of firewalls then provides a practical guide to the implementing and configuration of various types of firewalls at an organisation.

Who should attend?

This course will be of interest to staff working at JANET connected organisation with responsibility for the management of firewalls of the security of networks. The course requires no previous experience in Firewalls, but assumes a degree of familiarity with basic networking concepts. Experience with using a computer and a standard web browser is required. Some knowledge of preventive security would also be an advantage so delegates might find attending our ‘Managing IT Security’ course prior to registering for this course an advantage.

Timetable/On the Day

The course timetable will be adjusted on the day to allow discussion of areas of particular interest to the audience. The course will therefore run from 10am to 4.30pm. Registration will take place from 09:45 – 10:00.

All our courses are designed to provide a balance between practical activities and information dissemination as we believe people learn when they are engaged within the instructional process. This course includes participant involvement through hands-on activities, discussion, group work and simulations created specifically for the course. All delegates will receive a workbook specifically written for the course.
