EditorialSharp-eyed readers may notice a slight rearrangement of the reporting structure for this quarter. Specifically two services formerly reported on in Section 9, Development, have become the responsibility of the Operations division. In other words, though development will continue, they have reached the stage where they can be considered services in their own right. Thus JANET Lightpath can now be found at section 7.7 and Federated Access Management at section 4.10. Meanwhile we report that two new courses for JANET Training have been piloted - "Computers, Privacy and the Law" and "Implementing Shibboleth 2 Service Provider". Both are in response to demand from the JANET community for expertise in these areas, one under constant review with updates in legislation and the other concerning a technology whose uptake in the UK federation is constantly on the increase. New technologies continue to arise, bringing with them new needs and expectations, which JANET(UK) continues to anticipate and to meet. New Number for JANET Service Desk 0300 numbers are available for the public sector and, unlike numbers with an 08 prefix, they cost the same to call as landline numbers, even from a mobile phone. The new numbers completely replace the old 0870 numbers, which will shortly be cancelled.
