JANET Original Netsight was a network traffic monitoring system developed by JANET(UK) to provide an easy to understand view of the status and performance of the JANET network. The Original Netsight system comprised a number of monitoring sub-systems deployed around the JANET network with each sub-system performing three main tasks:
- To monitor the performance of the whole of the JANET backbone, by polling all the other edge points on the backbone. The information collected was then made publicly available on the web on the Netsight system itself, in both tabular and graphical formats.
- To monitor the performance of JANET's links to the rest of the Internet, such as the circuits to the US and the connection to the LINX (London Internet Exchange).
- To monitor the performance and traffic levels on all the JANET customer access links within the local regional network. The information collected, covering traffic levels, packet loss and latency, was made available to individuals through a set of the password protected private pages on the web.
All of the JANET Original Netsight sub-systems monitored the backbone and external links and were populated with the customer connections within their local region.
The New Netsight system is a centralised system that has been installed to replace the Original Netsight sub-systems deployed around the JANET network.
No Original Netsight sub-system is still operational :
All regional networks previously monitored via Original Netsight sub-systems are now being monitored via New Netsight.
