Further information:
In order to participate in the JANET Certificate Service your organisation will need to sign and return, by fax or post, the Authorised Representative form available from:
http://www.ja.net/documents/services/jcs/authorised-representative-form.pdf
Any change to the organisations representative(s) who have access to this service requires an updated representative form to be submitted. Once this form has been received, JANET(UK) will issue your authorised representatives with the login credentials for the Certificate Service web interface.
By logging in to the account, your authorised representatives will be able to request new certificates by uploading certificate signing requests. Automated processing of requests will then be carried out by our software application which will check the subject of the certificate signing request to ensure that the certificate is being requested for a fully qualified domain name owned by your organisation and that the organisation name given in the request matches the legal title of your organisation. Please note that we do not issue certificates for local domains. Various other checks will also be made to ensure the technical validity of the request.
If successful, the authorised representative will be able to download a copy of the issued certificate usually within a couple of hours of submitting the request. If the domain name in the request is not an .ac.uk or .gov.uk domain, it will be referred for manual processing: a member of the JTAG team will validate the domain name used within the request and will then progress the request - either approving or denying.
If approved, the certificate will be issued and can be retrieved by your authorised representative. If denied, we will get in touch with your authorised representative to discuss the reason(s) for denial. Requests for certificates that use non .ac.uk or .gov.uk domains will be referred for manual processing for the first instance of that domain name being used in a certificate request. Once JANET(UK) has successfully validated such a domain name, the system will automatically process further requests using that same domain name. JANET(UK) will then re-validate the domain name on a regular basis.
In addition to requesting certificates, your authorised representatives will also be able to list and retrieve all of the certificates issued to your organisation through the new service. It will also be possible for them to revoke certificates issued to your organisation through the web interface. JANET(UK) expects the new service to benefit its users greatly through a purely electronic submission and retrieval process and automated validations of requests which will lead to a reduced turnaround time for requests.
For any queries about the service please contact service@ja.net specifying JANET Certificate Service in the subject field.
