The Janet Certificate Service offers a range of features. Through a simple online interface it enables the automated processing of certificate requests, for all .ac.uk and gov.uk domains, along with the ability to monitor and manage new certificates that are issued. This includes certificate revocations and automated alerts when certificates are close to their expiry date. The online interface also allows federated access for nominated contacts. JANET(UK) will continue to absorb the costs of providing this service to its customers.

Case studies

Case studies are available of organisations that have already implemented the Janet Certificate Service:

Financial Transactions

This certificate can be used for all financial transactions. These certificates usually cost in the region of £1,000 for a 3-year certificate but Janet has made an arrangement with Comodo to provide it's subscribers with EVs at no cost;

EV certificates can be requested by send an email together with the CSR (Certificate Signing Request) to the Janet Service Desk (tag@ja.net)

Unified Communication Certificates

Designed for securing multiple unique domains, for use with Microsoft Exchange 2007 and 2010, or Office Communications Server, where both external and internal domains are required such as mail.yourdomain.com, autodiscover.yourdomain.com, exchange1.yourdomain.local, etc.

The Certificate Service is now issuing wildcard certificates. The main use case identified for this type of certificate is to support the deployment of EZProxy servers. Wildcard certificates are not available through the normal web interface but upon request directly from Janet Service Desk.

Please click here for further information about how to obtain a Wildcard certificate.

Wildcard certificates are available at the sub-domain level, that is to say, they can be used to secure sub-domains but not to secure entire domains due to potential security implications. For example, certificates can be issued for *.proxy.example.ac.uk but not for *.example.ac.uk.
