Regional Delivery Options
JANET services are delivered to most of our customers via three different means: Regional Network Operators, JANET(UK) itself and companies which operate under bespoke contracts. Regional Network Operators (RNOs) are companies and regional consortia of higher and further education institutions delivering JANET services to tertiary education: each operates a high-performance multi-service telecommunications network within its geographical area.
Most JANET customers receive service through the RNOs and this arrangement is governed by the JANET Partner Agreement (JPA). The JPA is a legal agreement between JANET(UK) and the RNOs, whereby JANET(UK) provides funding and connects the regional network to the JANET backbone in a resilient manner and the RNO provides the required services to defined service levels. The JPA came into effect in October 2008.
Changes to Regional Delivery
JANET(UK) has conducted a review of the mechanisms for the delivery of JANET service. The review has concluded that JANET should move away from the current delivery model under the JPA contract and more directly deliver services itself. This programme of change will be conducted over a period of at least five years.
