Regional Networks
JANET services are delivered to most of our customers via regional networks. For delivery to tertiary education these regional networks are operated by regional consortia of higher and further education institutions, acting as "Regional Network Operators" (RNOs). Each operates a high-performance multi-service telecommunications network within its geographical area. See below for a list of these.
The delivery of JANET services across the regional network is governed by a legal agreement between JANET(UK) and the RNO, whereby JANET(UK) provides funding and connects the regional network to the JANET backbone in a resilient manner, and the RNO provides the required delivery services to defined service levels.
This arrangement has operated sucessfully since October 2001, under an agreement known as the Regional Partner Academic Network (RPAN) Agreement. In 2006 JANET(UK) and the RNOs collectively began work on a successor to this agreement, designed to meet the evolving demands of the JANET community. This is known as the JANET Partner Agreement (JPA) and will come into formal effect in October 2008. The RNOs and JANET(UK) will be working together during 2008 to prepare for the implementation of the JPA.
