How to Join
On this page:
Introduction
This page is relevant to IT Services staff at organisations interested in joining JANET Roaming and providing eduroam at their organisation. Individuals wanting to use eduroam should consult their own organisation's eduroam information web page - follow links on Where you can use eduroam
Organisations considering joining JANET Roaming in order to provide the eduroam service are recommended to familiarise themselves with the technical requirements overview presented in How eduroam Works and to read and accept the usage policy at JANET eduroam Policy (pdf). The full technical specification for the service can be found at the Technical Specification.
Further information, advice and guidance is freely available for interested parties. Please e-mail or telephone your enquiry to the JANET Service Desk e-mail: JSD service stating your interest in eduroam.
Organisations wishing to proceed and join the service should note the terms of eligibility and rules of membership. The form below should then be copied and pasted with completed details into an e-mail to the JANET Service Desk. (In applying to join JANET Roaming, applicants place themselves under no time commitment to implement an operational service, although it is suggested that this should be achieved within 6 months of application.)
Eligibility
JANET eduroam eligibility policy: any JANET customer organisation is eligible to join JANET Roaming and participate in the provision of eduroam as defined under the terms of the JANET Eligibility Policy.
Rules of Membership
Use of the eduroam service on JANET is subject to the JANET Acceptable Use Policy the JANET Security Policy and the JANET eduroam Policy.
By submitting an application to JANET(UK) to join JANET Roaming, organisations agree that they will bide by the terms of the JANET eduroam Policy and strictly adhere to the Technical Specification.
It will be deemed that in submitting their application, applicants:
- Have sufficient authority within the organisation to submit the application
- Declare that the organisation is entitled to use the DNS name requested for use as the user realm name
- Accept that the Policies and the Technicial Specification governing the service defined by JANET(UK) may evolve over time.
By applying to join JANET Roaming, organisations accept that they indemnify JANET(UK), their agents and subcontractors against any and all liability for any claims arising from their use of the service.
Application Form
eduroam is a trust-based network access service federation and all participating organisations must accept the responsibilities associated with issuing user credentials and inter-working with the JANET RADIUS infrastructure. Furthermore, due to the significant investment in effort required from the organisation to set up and to effectively promote eduroam to the organisation's user base to ensure wide take-up, applications can only be accepted from a director or network management contact registered with JANET Service Desk.
[ Individual users do NOT need to separately join the service and should NOT send the application form below - any member of a participating organisation who has a network logon account can use eduroam. Individuals who are not members of an organisation eligible to join JRS will not be able to make use of the service.]

[1] This is the name of the legal entity that is registering to participate in eduroam in the UK.
[2] This is the name the organisation/operational unit deploying eduroam is commonly known by and will be used for its listing on the JANET web pages and in the JRS Support server.
[3] A web login account on the JRS Support server will be created for the technical contact to enable update of the organisation’s JRS configuration and service details. (Secondary contacts can be created if you wish via the JRS Support site).
[4] Service alerts and important notifications warranting your soonest attention only will be sent to this contact. Some organisations have chosen to use their service desk ticketing e-mail for this.
[5] As per the Technical Specification, the realm must be (or be derived from) a DNS name from the organisation's registered DNS namespace. It is expected that most organisations will request their domain name (eg."myorg.ac.uk") although it is perfectly acceptable to request a sub-domain name (eg."staff.myorg.ac.uk"). If you intend to act as a Visited site only and do not intend to register a realm name please state, "not required Visited site only".
[6] Implementation of WPA/TKIP-only eduroam WLAN is deprecated. Joiners should support WPA2/AES on their eduroam networks, but may also support WPA/TKIP. For further advice on which WLAN security or eduroam service type to implement, you can state – "advice requested".
