This site is for JANET customers in Scotland.

JANET(UK) is implementing a more directly managed regional delivery model for JANET services that will streamline the management process and reduce costs by sharing resources and eliminating duplication of effort. Ultimately, the operation of all regional networks will be brought in-house to JANET(UK) and managed directly from there.

In June of this year JANET(UK) launched a procurement to replace the dark fibre infrastructure and managed service connections for the FaTMAN regional network. The existing JANET telecommunications framework was chosen as the best mechanism to achieve this. The incumbent supplier was selected and as such the physical connections will largely remain unchanged with minimum disruption to end customers. JANET(UK) are now working closely with the supplier and FaTMAN to ensure a smooth contract transfer. Further information will appear relating to the operations transfer as details are confirmed.

The advanced technology at the heart of JANET coupled with the government’s drive for shared services and efficient procurement mean that JANET’s common infrastructure can support multiple communities and deliver significant savings.

  • Connectivity: the current JANET backbone has delivered £60 million in savings since its launch 5 years ago.

  • Email abuse prevention: JANET subscribes centrally to black- and whitelists on behalf of the entire community, leading to savings of £4.6 million per annum.

  • Server certificates: basic certificates offered by the JANET Certificate Service to secure online transactions are procured at a favourable rate which allows this to be offered as part of a JANET connection, saving customers over £0.75 million per annum.
