QOS Development Project

Phase 1 of the project began in 2002 with the goal of assessing the benefits of QoS on JANET in a multi-domain and multi-vendor environment for a range of production applications. Phase 1 showed some obvious benefits of this approach for popular services such as Videoconferencing and Voice over IP, but it also showed that provisioning a QoS service would be a major challenge.

Phase 2 of the project began in November 2005 primarily to investigate the feasibility of QoS production services for the JANET community. Phase 2 focused on developing a generic QoS service model that may create a basis for stable, consistent and maintainable QoS service across the JANET core and regional networks.

In March 2006, Phase 2 participants produced a Network Performance Survey that aimed to provide up-to-date information about the JANET community's requirements for network performance and check it against the project objectives and plans. The results of the survey are available.

By December 2006, sufficient work had been carried out by the project participants to understand the complexities involved in maintaining an operationally stable QoS service across the multi-network domain of JANET. It was also found that the JANET core and most of the regional networks have sufficient headroom in terms of link and router capacity to transfer packets within acceptable timeframes. Based on the findings, the project group concluded that the overheads to configure and maintain production JANET QoS services outweigh the requirements identified; however, it was acknowledged that the access links between JANET user sites and regional networks are likely to get congested as they do not always have enough capacity to serve all user application traffic with the required quality.

Phase 2 of the project was finished in December 2007 with producing a set of guidance documentation for the JANET community to help the JANET-connected institutions and Regional Network Operators with QoS understanding and deployment.
