JANET QoS PROJECT PHASE 2 - OBJECTIVES
Phase 2 of the JANET QoS Development Project has the goal of establishing end-to-end production QoS services across the JANET backbone, Regional Networks and Campus Networks. It is envisaged that the project may have a lifetime of approximately two years.
The objectives:
- Review user community requirements and identify a range of applications
- Review of QoS classes explored during Phase 1 and definition of a new set of QoS classes.
- Explore and define DiffServ-based models that can be deployed on/across the JANET multi-domain environment. The description of the models should include: policy rules; provisioning and admission control procedures/recommendations.
(3a.) A static model should be the main objective of the project. The model can include some dynamic admission control elements.
(3b.) A dynamic bookable model should be explored as a secondary advanced option which can improve a static model for some QoS applications. - Define SLD / SLAs for different types of domains (SJ, RN, institutions – this last could only be SLD).
- Explore interoperability of QoS with other new technologies that are supported by modern IP routing equipment, such as IP Multicast, IPv6 and others.
- Extend the range of QoS solutions more widely to include FE organisations and schools. Any implementation of QoS should take into account the environment within the JANET connected network such as the relatively low speed of access links, usage of private address space and limited access to technical resources.
- Deploy a monitoring system that can provide network administrators and end-users with the relevant QoS metrics, allowing them to check how the service conforms against the SLA requirements.
- Develop solutions and procedures for the interaction of QoS mechanisms with customer edge equipment such as firewalls, compression devices, VPN and multimedia gateways.
- Produce documentation for the JANET community such as administrator and user guides, best practice documents, cookbooks, configuration examples, case studies etc.
