JANET QoS OVERVIEW
QoS is based on the differentiated processing of different traffic classes during periods of congestion. A QoS-enabled network can provide different QoS services that transfer users’ traffic with different levels of QoS characteristics such as packet delays, delay variation, loss and sustained information rate.
Services include:
-
IP Premium, one of the most popular QoS services. IP Premium provides low latency while transferring packets, and is used for time-sensitive applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Videoconferencing.
-
Less than Best Effort (LBE), designed for applications that generate bulky and both non urgent and time sensitive traffic, so that it can be served when the network is not busy with other kinds of traffic. Emerging applications, for example GRID, could benefit from the LBE class of service.
-
Best Effort (BE), the one transport service currently supported by the Internet and most IP networks. This is the only service that JANET currently offers. The Best Effort service can only be adequate for all types of applications when all parts of the network are permanently underloaded, and thus the transport service is overprovisioned. An overprovisioned service is technically the simplest way of meeting the requirements of each traffic class, but it is not a viable solution as the costs can be significantly high.
