Call for Case Studies
An ongoing call for funded case studies in the wireless arena
Background
'Wireless' as a heading covers a variety of products that cater for a multitude of different needs. Examples of these technologies include:
- Satellite connectivity (one-way or two-way)
- Point-to-point or point-to-multipoint WAN connections (microwave or infra-red)
- Wireless LANs (2.4 or 5 GHz radio frequencies)
- Mobile Wireless (GPRS, UMTS)
- Personal Area Networks (Bluetooth)
Feedback from the JANET community continues to highlight the need for the dissemination of information (case studies, factsheets, best practice guidelines) about wireless as a whole: technologies, deployment issues and ongoing service support.
The JANET Wireless Advisory Group (WAG) wants to encourage JANET organisations to share their experiences of deploying wireless networks. One way to achieve this aim is ask the JANET community to document their experiences as case studies.
Funding
We appreciate that IT departments are very busy; therefore JANET(UK) will make available funds of up to £1000 to assist with the effort required. A JANET case study runs to around 12 pages, and is produced subject to draft review by the WAG and final approval by the JANET(UK) editorial board.
The majority of case studies will be funded through the Wireless Technology Advisory Service (WTAS), with contracts administered by the service administrator. In exceptional circumstances, studies may be funded directly from the network access budget.
Eligibility
If you are a member of a JANET organisation that has led or has been involved in a wireless network activity within your organisation, you will be eligible to submit a proposal. Proposals that are submitted by a JANET organisation jointly with a commercial organisations on wireless projects will also be considered, however if such case studies are accepted JANET(UK)'s contact point will be the JANET organisation.
Submission of proposals
If you are interested in writing a case study, the please submit a short abstract (of not more than two A4 pages) outlining the proposal by e-mail to Mark O'Leary in the following format:
- Title
- Authors, Author Affiliations, Author Contact Details. The first and family names of all authors and co-authors should be provided. The organisational affiliation, postal address and e-mail address of each author should also be listed
- Keywords. Abstracts should include between one and five keywords to describe the contents. Each keyword (which may be a phrase or a single word) should describe a single concept. Conjunctives (words such as "and", and "while" which join words or, phrases together) and common words such as "computer" should be avoided. Abbreviations and acronyms should be spelt out (e.g. "Asynchronous Transfer Mode" instead of "ATM") unless the abbreviation is so well established that the full term is rarely used, for example, use "laser" instead of "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation".
- Abstract. 100 to 250 words. (scope of the project, reason for project, planning, costing, implementation, installation and commissioning, operational performance and reliability, utilisation and the benefits brought, and any lessons learned.)
- Time required to complete the case study. Typically less than 3 months (if over 3 months please state reason why).
Approval process
Once a short abstract has been received, a review will be undertaken by members of the JANET Wireless Advisory Group and a decision will be made on whether the case study is approved. If approved, funding will be made available to write the case study. The case study should typically be completed within 3 months from the date that a letter of agreement has been signed with JANET(UK). Funds will be released upon editorial board approval of the completed work.Case Study Guidelines
This document outlines the desired structure and content, useful information on the legal requirements that must be considered when writing case studies that will be made available on the JANET(UK) website, guidance on text formatting and required data formats.
