Location Awareness
Wireless networks may be used to extract location cues about the client nodes (laptops, PDAs, phones) that use them. This information can in turn be exploited to provide richer, more relevant content and new classes of application to the roaming user.
JANET(UK) is seeking to explore and promote this richer use of wireless infrastructure, and is taking a lead in promoting location awareness among European NRENs.
Trial Programme 2007-2009
A Call for Participation was launched in 2007 with a view to fully exploring this subject area. The following organisations bid successfully for funding to participate in one or more aspects of the trial programme (the individual contributors are credited within the respective documents). We thank them for their sustained effort and high standard of work throughout this project.
- Cardiff University
- Lancaster University
- Salford University (with Daresbury Labs)
- Swansea University
- Ulster University
The programme consisted of the following activities:
- A1 Overview of Location technologies
- A2 Location Accuracy and Security
- B1 Context Aware Security
- B2 Interactive Maps
- B3 Asset Tracking
- C1 Extraction and storage
This work is now complete, and the results are currently available as separate pdf downloads. We will also be compiling a comprehensive booklet from this material - watch this space!
Future Work
In consultation with the trial participants, we are considering options for extending further work in this field. All suggestions welcome, to mark.o'leary@ja.net.
