IPTV on JANET

Student produced content, shows and TV services are obvious areas that can benefit from IP based distribution. The ability to showcase films, documentaries and university specific content can provide real benefit to media and journalism students, film schools and any other disciplines that involve the creation of relevant content. Lots of student produced content remains on recorded media and is never shown to others.

JANET(UK) is currently working with a number of student focused IPTV based projects including INUK's Freewire TV and the Open Student Television Network (OSTN) in order to bring student orientated television to the JANET community.

As of April 2008, Sub.tv is now available over the JANET network, for all JANET connect sites wishing to make use of the Sub.tv service. Please see the JANET and sub.tv document, which is available for all those wanting to find out more. For more information on Sub.tv: www.sub.tv

Television Licensing

In June 2006, JANET(UK) (then Ukerna) sought advice from the Television Licensing Policy Group, regarding television licensing requirements in conjunction with IPTV. This resulted in JANET(UK)'s statement on Television Licensing and IP Television Services, which offers guidance to the JANET community.

IPTV Special Interest Group

JANET(UK) has recently created the IPTV Special Interest Group, which held its first meeting in April 2008. The IPTV SIG is responsible for providing advice on current and future video applications and services. More information can be found at the IPTV Special Interest Group page.

Ultra High Definition

With the recent developments and interest in ultra high definition technology, from not only the broadcast industry, but also from members of the JANET community, JANET(UK) has recently researched into this area.
