Bridging the Gap between IT and Researchers
The event, run in collaboration with JISC, looked at the challenges of liaising with researchers and some of the models for liaison within the HE community.
It was agreed that research is one of the most important areas within a University and subsequently an area that needs both dedicated support and resources. The challenge however, expressed by those attending, seems to be how to understand the needs and business processes involved of this specialised group of workers.
In recognising the importance of research within their organisations, many Universities have now employed a dedicated member of staff to support this function. Their main task seems to be to try and bridge the gap between IT Departments and the researchers, and promote collaboration between the two departments.
Those involved in supporting researchers all agreed that it was imperative to understand the needs of the researcher and provide tools and solutions to those identified. The theme of the event was very much how research facilitators need to offer a balance between flexibility and security for their research departments, making them aware of the resources available, (and their limitations), best practice and advice on data management.
The event offered a great opportunity to bring together a diverse selection of individuals whose task it is to support researchers in their work, to share ideas, discuss best practice and encourage collaboration across institutions.
