Students at Southampton design graphical interface for JANET Roaming

25 MARCH 2010: Each year JANET(UK) participates in the University of Southampton's MSc course Group Design Project programme. This year students on the course were set the task of prototyping a graphical interface to the log files of the JANET Roaming Service. This system maps the endpoints of roaming transactions and provides a 3D image similar to a flight map. This graphical interface can serve as both a diagnostic tool for service operators as well as a compelling illustration of the success of this service, whilst preserving individual user privacy.

The prototype is currently being adapted for production use with JANET Roaming and further work is examining how this visualisation tool may be applied to other JANET services, such as videoconferencing, and shared with other NRENs around Europe. Further developments in this area will be reported on the JANET website and in this bulletin.
