JANET investigates IF-MAP

25 MARCH 2010: JANET(UK) has initiated work to investigative activities relating to IF-MAP.

IF-MAP is a protocol being developed by the TNC arm of the Trusted Computing Group. It allows virtually any network component to receive publish or retreive dynamic information relating to it's state. By facilitating communication between network services, policy decisions can be enforced on the strength of richer background information. Applications could include strengthening network security through persistent network access control, enabling network location services, and other applications.

IF-MAP technology is likely to impact the education sector initially through enabling a 'next generation' network access control, but may also be generalized as a means of publishing domain-specific information such as eduroam roaming transactions, or 'network weathermap' information.
