Loughborough and Southampton join forces as 500 viewers watch home team win.
15/5/09: Wednesday the 13th of May saw Loughborough University’s 1st XV face up to the combined might of the England Under 20s squad. This was another chance for Loughborough Students Union TV (LSUTV) to show off their live TV production skills with a 2hr live broadcast over the JANET network. With assistance from Southampton University Students Union (SUSU) and Loughborough’s IT Services department the home team’s 23-20 win over a disjointed England side sent a little shockwave through the rugby world. The match was watched live on the Internet by over 500 viewers via Southampton’s Flash Streaming Media Encoder and Server, making the production a truly collaborative effort. The use of Flash media presented a relatively low barrier to entry for viewers due to its wide uptake among computer users, its high-quality video and audio and interactive elements including a choice of low, medium and high quality streams of the main show and a camera in the gallery. Tim Marshall, CEO of JANET(UK), who was present said “It took me back to my old days of producing outside broadcasts from Twickenham. I was incredibly impressed by the innovation, production skills and teamwork of the students to produce such a quality transmission. They are a credit to Loughborough, Southampton and the whole student TV community.”
